In the words of the late Aaliyah, “age ain’t nothing but a number.” We’re firm believers that you can look gorgeous at any stage of life. That’s why we’ve rounded up the best tips from our team’s skin and beauty gurus. Kelley, Louise, Lauren, Paige, Bonnie, and Julie are sharing their best makeup tips for any age. Whether you’re young and fabulous or at the turn of your life and still just as flawless as ever, here is our advice for looking your best, no matter how many candles are on your birthday cake this year!

Teens

One angst of being a teenager is dealing with breakouts. You can take comfort knowing you aren’t the only one, but now is the perfect time to develop good skin care habits. At the very minimum, wash your face before bed and never, ever sleep with makeup on. If a pesky pimple does rear its ugly head, go over it with concealer and a light dusting of powder to reduce the redness. Most importantly, try not to let it bother you too much. Show the world your inner beauty and we guarantee no one will even notice the breakout.

Now is the time to experiment with makeup, if you want! Have fun, express your creativity, and do it up…glitter shadow, winged liner, metallics, whatever suits your fancy. Don’t be afraid to try new things. But also keep in mind that less is more! Your face is naturally blushing and beautiful at this point in your life, so take advantage of it! Don’t feel the need to be all done up all the time. A good mascara, tinted moisturizer, and a lip glaze are all you really need to look like yourself but amplified. We encourage you to learn the proper ways to apply various beauty products and find what works for you. But spring for a lesson with a real professional, not a YouTuber or beauty blogger. Whatever you do, just promise us you won’t over groom those brows! See a professional brow artist and stay away from the tweezers! You’ll thank us later.

20s & 30s

The word of these decades is moisturize. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. We don’t repeat ourselves for dramatic emphasis but to really hammer home the importance of this step in your beauty regimen. While wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin might seem like they are a far way off, they can start developing at this stage. Start your fight against aging skin early! One way to do this is by avoiding the sun. It’s tempting to bask in the rays, we know. But it’s also the fastest way to age yourself. Opt for bronzer instead. If you must sit in the sun, absolutely do not skip the SPF!

Another step to start adding to your beauty routine is exfoliation. From your face all the way down to your toes, exfoliating will remove dead skin cells, bring newer skin to the surface, result in a closer shave, and even help your lipstick go on more smoothly.

When it comes to makeup, pick your favorite facial feature and only play that up. Now is not the time to experiment with an all-over dramatic look. If you like your eyes best, go for a bold look there but stick with something neutral on the lips, or vice versa. A bright shade of lipstick looks amazing when paired with super soft eyes and thin liner on the top lids only.

40s & 50s

Working moms and busy women, listen up! You might be feeling those sleepless nights and tiresome days, and you probably think your face is showing it a bit. At this point in your life, a great concealer is going to be your best friend. Dab it under your eyes to hide darkness, and anywhere else on your face you see hyper-pigmentation. Making your lashes a focal point will give the illusion of a well-rested you. Start with using a lash boosting serum that will help with growth, and a volumizing mascara that will make those peepers pop! Give one of our lash lifts a try, add a strip of faux lashes for special occasions, or go full tilt with lash extensions. Not sure which is best for you? Here’s how to find the perfect lash routine for your lifestyle.

Now is also the time to start phasing out any metallic makeup. Shimmer will only emphasize those fine lines you’re probably starting to notice. Instead, try smokey but soft shades that draw attention. Be careful of not using too much powder, which will make your skin look chalky and dry. A nice, natural, dewy finish is what you want and AVEDA’s mineral powder can help you get it!

60s +

Just like a fine wine, things always get better with age. But as we age, sometimes it’s better to ease up on our old routines. At this stage of life, less is more, especially when it comes to makeup. Opt for a sheer foundation which will let your natural skin shine through without feeling heavy or cakey. You can even throw on a self-tanner or bronzer to warm up your face. Where you do want to add more, though, is on the cheeks and the eyes. A little more blush will add color, while a good brow pencil will help fill in any sparseness and frame the face. Choose neutral eye shadow tones – think peaches, warm browns, and coppers. Stay clear of too much pigment or shimmer. Save liner for the top lids only. Keep it close to the lash line and make sure it’s blended at the corners. This will give the illusion of an uplifted effect, as can curling your eyelashes (or try our lash lift!). Finish with mascara and a light lip color that works best with your complexion. Dark lip shades will make your lips looks thinner. Fuller lips can also be achieved by adding a gloss on top!
